For Parents:
Dear Parents,
Hello! My name is Cassie Yoon and I am very excited to say that I will be your child's teacher for the upcoming school year. This year, we will be covering the Revolutionary war up until the Civil War era.
With that said, I wanted to introduce myself to you before the year starts. I am a recent graduate of the history and secondary education program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and this will be my first year teaching. I have lived in the Chicago suburb area for most of my life, which is why I came back to teach in this neighborhood. While I was at UIUC, I've observed/taught social studies classes at Jefferson Middle School and J.W. Eater Junior High.
Some of the goals I have for my students is that they gain a genuine interest in the topics we cover and challenge themselves to do well in my class. In order to achieve these goals, I will make my lessons as relatable and interesting as possible so that it reaches all of my students. On top of that, I will hold very high standards for my students while also maintaining a positive classroom environment so that they will be able to push themselves to do well. I am very committed to my students and will make myself available to them through e-mail, before/after school/lunch meetings, and more.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at (***) ***-****.
I will make sure to e-mail or call back within 24 hours so that we could communicate easily.
I genuinely look forward to meeting your children and start the school year.
Sincerely,
Ms. Yoon
For Students:
Dear Students,
Hello! My name is Ms. Yoon and I will be your social studies teacher for the 2015-2016 school year! I am very excited to meet and get to know you all as the school year progresses.
To share a little about me before the year begins, I am a recent graduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I studied history and secondary education. I grew up in Northbrook, Illinois and attended Maple Middle School and Glenbrook North High School. When I was your age, I was involved in choir, show choir, band, and pretty much anything that had to do with music. Social studies was (and still is) my favorite subject, and I can't wait to get to you know all of your interests!
Throughout the year, I hope that you all will develop an interest in the topics we are covering in our class by participating and challenging yourselves to do your best. I believe that you all have the potential to do exceedingly well and I have very high expectations for you all already. Just as I expect the best from you, you can also make sure to expect a lot from me. I will incorporate a lot of exciting and interesting materials in class that I hope you all enjoy and can look forward to. Also, my door is open 24/7 whether it'd be through e-mail ([email protected]), lunch hour, and/or after/before school hours. If you have any concerns about the class- or anything at all- just contact me! I will get back to you as soon as I can.
I am very excited to meet you all and start the school year!
Sincerely,
Ms. Yoon

Rationale:
My rationale for the parent letter is to be semi-professional and include the topics we would be covering for the school year because I believe it's important for parents to know what their children will be learning for the year. Also, I included the my professional background (university, schools I've taught/observed at, etc) because I believe that parents would be curious about personal information about their children's teacher as far as their qualifications and experience.
I've included my goals for my students and what they should expect of me as a teacher because it's important that they know what I expect from their children and also what they can count on me doing as their child's teacher.
I also believe it's important to add my contact information so that I can make myself available to any questions or concerns from the parents.
My rationale for the student letter was also to be semi-professional. It was more laid back than the parent letter by adding personal information that my students could possibly relate to (where I grew up, what schools I've attended, my favorite subject, and my hobbies when I was their age). I also added the goals I had for them and also what they can expect of me as their teacher. I also added my contact information and when I was free to let students know that they can come to for any questions or concerns at any time.
