The picture above shows my ideal middle school classroom. I have positioned all of the furniture, technology, and decor strategically because a classroom with good arrangement can strengthen classroom management.
First, I assumed that a class would have about 20-30 students. Therefore, I put 22 desks in my classroom. I have put a supplies table so that students can have a place to grab pencils, paper, stapler, and sharpener whenever they want. I also put a bulletin board so I can display student's work and put up announcements. This is in front of the classroom so that everyone can easily see it. I have also placed the class rules in the front for the same reasons. In addition, I believe it is important to have a lot of posters and course relevant material hanging on the walls to make the room more appealing and fun.
I put two desks next to each other into four rows all facing the Smartboard. I have done this because I want a lot of discussion in my classroom. The students who are placed immediately next to each other will be partners to discuss whatever question I may have posed until I assign new seats. I believe that this arrangement best fits my teaching style because students can have a lot of discussion without a lot of distraction that can come if there's more than two people talking (Roy, 15). Students can easily have discussion time with the partner next to them without moving their chairs/desks around, and also can see the board easily when I, another teacher, or another student is instructing/presenting. There is also a lot of space between each pair so that I can easily move around and help students. I have placed the teacher desk in the corner so that I will be able to see everything that's happening in the classroom (Emmer& Evertson, 15). I will be able to see all of the students in the rows, and even students who will be working in the discussion table in the back. This will encourage students to stay on task and less inclined to distract one another. I also wanted my computer to be near the Smartboard so I can use both simultaneously since my computer will be connected to it. I did not want to waste time or distract the students in any way if I had to walk across the room to use my computer to show something on the board.
The discussion/work table is going to be used for many things. It can be used for group discussions, students who have fallen behind and need extra help, a place to work on projects, and more. I have placed it in the back so that students who are working in the front will not be distracted from their talking. However, I have placed the chairs on the bottom half of the table so that they can still see the teacher's desk and the Smartboard. The Row 1,2,3,4 shelves will be used for students to place their homework, pick up worksheets/articles that will be used in class for the day, exit slip papers, extra credit material, and more. It's basically a filing system so I can be as organized as possible for every class (Emmer& Evertson, 18). I have placed two shelves on each side of the room so that the rows closest to them can get access without a huge line. I have also put a bookshelf near the back of the classroom so that I can put supplementary texts and dictionaries for students to use anytime. It is placed so that it's not an obstruction of view, but can be accessed without difficulty (Emmer & Evertson, 16).
